Get Healthy – Some Useful Resources
GET HEALTHY SERVICE
The focus of the Get Healthy Information and Coaching Service is on providing information and telephone support for healthy eating, being physically active and achieving and maintaining a healthy weight.
If you get started with the Get Healthy Information and Coaching Service you will receive an information booklet which has lots of useful information on healthy living and a workbook with some tools you can use to plan and check your progress.
You can download goal setting and action plan sheets from the Get Healthy Information and Coaching Service web site, as well as answer a quiz or two, find out what activities use the most energy and much more.
OTHER USEFUL INFORMATION
Lots of other useful information is available that could support your efforts to get healthy. Below are links to a selection of booklets, brochures or web sites that may be just what you are looking for.
HEALTHY EATING AND RECIPES
The Australian Guide to Healthy Eating contains detailed information on the variety of foods that we should eat regularly, as well as information on shopping, cooking and eating meals.
Eating two serves of fruit and five serves of vegetables each day can help protect against coronary heart disease, some forms of cancer, being overweight, and constipation. It can also help to reduce blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels, and improve control of diabetes. The booklet Go for 2 & 5 has lots of useful information on eating fruit and vegetables, including some recipes.
Do you know what you are really getting when you buy your weekly groceries? A food label will tell you a lot of information if you know what to look for. Reading Food Labels has some useful tips on what to look for and what it all means.
The Heart Foundation brochure on Healthy Eating and Drinking provides some easy tips to follow for healthy eating.
Healthy Eating means eating well for your body, so that you eat a variety of foods you need to keep healthy and feel good.
If you are looking for recipes, you can try those on the Go for 2 & 5 web site or the Measure Up Recipes on their web site.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
An important way to keep healthy is to make sure we get enough physical activity each day. For most of us, regular walking can fit the bill. Interesting Facts on Walking points out that as little as 30 minutes of brisk walking a day can improve your health and well being.
The Physical Activity Brochure published by the Premier's Physical Activity Council lists the key facts about physical activity and our health and provides some tips on the benefits of getting active.
If you have ever wondered about the physical activity you need to do to enhance your health, the National Physical Activity Guidelines for Adults is a good place to start.
MAINTAINING A HEALTHY WEIGHT
By looking after ourselves and our bodies in the best way we can, our weight and size will be the healthiest level that is possible for our body type. Healthy Weight Tips explains ways that we can take a positive and healthy approach to our weight.
You may have seen the Measure Up advertisements on TV. The Measure Up booklet includes tips on checking your weight, and taking steps to get active and eat well.
